The Design

The Design, formed in 1968, was a British soft sunshine pop, vocal group. From their own website their music is described as ‘sunshine harmony pop with a light hippy vibe’ and ‘melodic folk-pop with a shimmering, almost psychedelic, West Coast feel’. They released a half dozen albums from the early-mid 1970's, making their mark in the sunshine pop niche a bit belated. Though hardly big hit-makers, they were well known in England for their countless TV appearances during their time together.

Deep Six

The Deep Six were a vocal, early sunshine pop, folk, rock group from southern California (San Diego area) with a sound somewhat similar to the Mamas & Papas. Their first record was the single "Rising Sun." In late 1965 & early 1966 Deep Six promoted the song on both "American Bandstand" & "Where the Action Is" TV programs. Playing a guitar part on the single was Jim Messina of Buffalo Springfield fame. Their one-and-only album was released later in1966 & featured guest appearances from many well-known local musicians at the time. Liberty records was kind enough to release four more singles from the album, but sadly none charted.

RECOMMENDED SONG: Rising Sun (see video below + lyrics)

LYRICS: Rising Sun

As the end of day
Reveals the stars that one by one appear
I know another night has come
I know another fear

Are in the black and endless dark
By which I run
I pray for the morning after night
The rising of the sun

For in the night, I see your face
Your smile so like the sun
And in my heart, I feel your warmth
Then yet I have to run
Because the things to show my love
Have all been done
And so I wander through the night
Waiting for the sun

... And you...

And so I think I'll go out
Where ever it maybe
And in my troubled wandering
Find a way for me
To live without you
By my side constantly
To bide me forth
My mind at ease
And be free
Constantly

The David

The David (not to be confused with the more popular American band with the same name), was an obscure four piece band from south Wales. They released two singles with the highlight being "Light of Your Mind" in May of 1969. That song was written (but not performed) by James Griffin & Rob Royer who would go on to form pop group Bread.

Churchill's

The Churchill's were an English-singing Israeli rock & psychedelic band formed in 1965. They were the first of its kind from that region to write and play their own music & achieve modest success - at least in their homeland. The band's self-titled 1968 debut album, though not a huge seller worldwide, was considered by critics a pioneering psychedelic pop, underground rock & Mizrahi music masterpiece. The band subsequently moved to England where they recorded two more albums before disbanding.

LYRICS: When You're Gone

Separated, here we stand
Strangers in a foreign land
Trying to find out if we're really real

Two islands in the sea
Waiting for eternity
Taking what we beg, borrow or steal

You don't know how I feel
You don't know how I feel
In the morning
When you're gone

Wonder why I look at you
There's nothing more that I can do
When faces stare at us all through the day

Try to tell you of my dreams
Life is much more than it seems
And I mean every single word I say

You don't know how I cry
You don't know how I try
To be with you
When you're gone

You don't know what it means
You don't know what it means
To be with you
When you're gone

You don't know how I try
You don't know how I try
You don't know how I try...

Chocolate Watchband

The Chocolate Watchband (not to be confused with UK's Chocolate Watch Band) was a psychedelic & garage rock band formed in 1965 in San Jose, California. Their hard edge, rebellious sound had one critic calling them America's answer to the Rolling Stones. In 1967 they were an opening act for The Doors, & were amongst 30 other bands performing at the KFRC Magic Mountain Festival—the first rock music festival in the United States (before Monterrey). The Watchband Released 3 albums & 3 singles from 1967 to 1969, but success was minimal at best, though they garnered a solid local following in the San Jose/San Francisco region. They dissolved in 1970, but reunited in 1999.

RECOMMENDED SONG: In The Past (song video below + lyrics)

LYRICS: In The Past

Try, my friend, loving all
The things we used to love
I realize there was not
Very much to love
But that's no reason
To go on living in the past

Try, my friend, doing all
The things we used to do
If you could color me
It would be darkest blue
Give me another chance
I'll love you more than in the past

It's up to you to do
The things I want you to
Don't question me
It's gotta be this way

Please, my friend, hear me out
Before you have to go
It's time you understood
I think you ought to know
Give me another chance
I'll love you more than in the past

Chamaeleon Church

Chamaeleon Church was a short-lived American psychedelic rock (bosstown sound) band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1967. In 1968 they spent two weeks in New York City's Mayfair studios recording their debut album. The studio was the only one in town equipped with professional 8-track recording equipment. "Camilla Is Changing" would be the lone single from the LP. Though unique, it was largely ignored by the public. Later, band members would publicly state their dissatisfaction with producer Alan Lorber's "soft rock" musical direction on the album. By 1969 the band was no longer. Two of the members went on to join Ultimate Spinach to record their third and final album. NOTE: Chamaeleon Church featured future actor and comedian Chevy Chase as a keyboardist, drummer & backing vocalist.

LYRICS: Camillia Is Changing

You will find her turning in twilight
Phosphorous hair making her many things
Lends into anything

She's decided not to take what fortune brings
Still wants to be part of the color scheme
Clings to another dream

Camillia is changing, she's painting her room
She thinks she can hide the secrets inside

No one sees her safe beneath the masquerade
Seasons like sand slip through her hourglass
Leaving her color last

Camillia is changing, she's painting her room
She thinks she can hide the secrets inside

They were waiting just outside her painted room
Inside she turns, just wants to fix her hair
Looks in the mirror where...

Camillia is changing, she's painting her room
She thinks she can hide the secrets inside

Camillia is changing, she's painting her room
She thinks she can hide the secrets inside
